Boston Red Sox: Can they Turn their Season Around?
The 2025 season hasn’t gone as planned for the Boston Red Sox. After making big moves in the offseason to end their playoff drought, the team is struggling to stay competitive. Injuries, clubhouse drama, and defensive mistakes have hurt the team early on. Now, with a record of 11-17 in May and a recent sweep by the Milwaukee Brewers, fans are starting to lose patience, and many are pointing fingers at manager Alex Cora.
Should the Red Sox Fire Alex Cora?
Alex Cora has been a major part of the Red Sox organization for years, even helping lead them to a World Series title. But this season, things aren't working. The team has been underperforming despite high expectations. Cora signed a three-year contract extension in July that made him the second-highest-paid manager in Major League Baseball, earning over $21 million. Now, with the team falling behind in the standings, some fans and experts wonder if it’s time for a change. Is it fair to blame the manager for injuries and bad defense? Maybe not completely, but as the leader of the team, some responsibility does fall on him.
Could Top Prospect Roman Anthony Be the Spark?
One possible way to boost the team is calling up their top prospect, outfielder Roman Anthony. The 21-year-old has been on fire in Triple-A Worcester, batting .306 with eight home runs. He is ranked the number one MLB prospect by several major outlets and is viewed as a future star. No, Anthony won’t fix every problem or instantly turn the Red Sox into a playoff team. But he could bring energy and offense to a team that needs both.
Of course, adding Anthony would mean someone has to sit. The team would need to choose between Ceddanne Rafaela, Jarren Duran, or Wilyer Abreu. Rafaela is known for his amazing defense, so sitting him would be tough, but he is the most likely choice if Boston wants to give Anthony regular at-bats.
What’s Next for the Red Sox?
The Red Sox are facing a critical point in their season. They could fire Alex Cora and look for a new voice in the clubhouse. They could promote Roman Anthony to shake things up and try to bring some much-needed excitement. Or they could keep things the same and hope the team turns it around soon. One thing is clear, doing nothing is no longer an option. The season is moving quickly, and if the Red Sox want to make the playoffs, they need to make bold decisions, and they need to make them now.
