Center Stage: Buxton’s Power and Defense Steal the Spotlight in Minnesota
Byron Buxton reminded everyone why he is one of the most talented players in baseball during the Twins’ 6-2 win over the Texas Rangers. He showed off his speed, power, and athleticism with a highlight-reel diving catch and a monster home run that had the crowd buzzing.
The Catch: Full Extension Dive
In the top of the third inning, the Rangers led 2-0 and had runners on first and second. Marcus Semien lined a ball into the left-center field gap that looked like it would drive in two runs. But Buxton used his world-class speed to race over and made a full-extension, diving backhanded catch to end the inning. The play saved two runs and brought the Target Field crowd to its feet with a standing ovation.
The Home Run: Moonshot to Center Field
In the bottom half of the inning, after the first two Twins batters reached base, Buxton stepped up to the plate. Facing Rangers pitcher Jack Leiter, he crushed a slider 479 feet to center field. The ball landed in the second deck, making it the longest home run of Buxton’s career and the second-longest in Major League Baseball this season.
Buxton’s Talent Shines Bright
Byron Buxton has long been viewed as one of baseball’s most electric players. When he’s healthy, he’s a game-changer. Staying on the field hasn’t always been easy, but in this game, he gave everyone a reminder of just how special he can be.
"We saw some things from our center fielder that you probably won't forget,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “Pat on the back to everyone who was at the ballpark tonight to be able to watch what he did out there. One of the more mesmerizing performances that you'll ever see on a field.” (MLB.com)
Since returning from a concussion, Buxton has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball. In the 10 games since he came back, he is batting .350 with 14 RBIs and three stolen bases. He also leads the Twins in home runs this season with 11.
With his defense, speed, and power all on display, it was a night that showed exactly why Byron Buxton is one of the most exciting players in the game.
