Colorado Rockies Set MLB Record for Most Losses in April, But Show Signs of Hope
The Colorado Rockies have had a brutal start to the 2025 season. With a 5-25 record, they now hold the Major League Baseball (MLB) record for the most losses ever in the month of April. They’ve lost 16 of their last 17 games, including an eight-game losing streak before finally pulling off a hard-fought 2-1 win over the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday.
A Much Needed Win
That win came thanks to two of the Rockies’ most promising young players. Rookie pitcher Chase Dollander, the team’s top prospect and No. 23 overall in MLB, pitched 5⅔ strong innings. He gave up just one run on two hits and three walks while striking out four. It was his second win of the season and came against one of the toughest lineups in baseball.
The difference-maker at the plate was outfielder Brenton Doyle. He smashed a tie-breaking solo home run off Braves ace Chris Sale, the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, in the third inning. That home run gave the Rockies a rare lead and this time, they held onto it.
Manager Bud Black was honest about how much the team needed the win. “We needed a game like this to win,” Black told reporters postgame, “because obviously we’re not scoring a lot of runs.” (The Athletic)
A Concerning Record In Reach
Even with the victory, the Rockies still sit at the bottom of the standings with the worst record in baseball. They’re on pace to lose 135 games, which would be the most in modern MLB history. Last season’s Chicago White Sox, who were historically bad, had already won six games by the end of April and finished with 121 losses.
Black knows the struggles are wearing on the players. “Guys are angry. All the adjectives you want to throw out there,” he said. “These guys are professional baseball players who want to win games and want to do well, and it just hasn’t happened as a group. We just don’t have enough guys playing well.” (The Athletic)
Despite the record-breaking slump, the Rockies are hoping that strong performances from Dollander and Doyle can help spark a turnaround—or at least help them avoid becoming one of the worst teams in MLB history.
