Falcons Soar Past Cardinals 26-19 in Week 16 Victory
The Atlanta Falcons (5-8) ventured to Arizona with aspirations of building momentum following their remarkable comeback victory over Tampa Bay. Conversely, the Cardinals (3-11) sought to put an end to their six-game losing streak while highlighting positive aspects of what has been a disappointing season.
First Quarter: Cardinals Strike First
Arizona commenced the game with intensity as quarterback Jacoby Brissett connected with wide receiver Michael Wilson for an impressive 32-yard touchdown pass. Although the play was initially ruled incomplete, a successful challenge by the Cardinals rectified the call, allowing Wilson to be credited with a sensational catch that provided Arizona with a 7-0 advantage. In response, the Falcons orchestrated a solid drive culminating in a 49-yard field goal by kicker Gonzalez, narrowing the deficit to 7-3 by the conclusion of the first quarter.
Second Quarter: Offensive Explosion
The second quarter transformed into a veritable scoring extravaganza! Arizona augmented their lead with a 51-yard field goal, extending the score to 10-3. Subsequently, Bijan Robinson took charge for Atlanta. The star running back showcased his exceptional receiving ability by catching a splendid 41-yard pass from Kirk Cousins. Robinson then powered through for a touchdown from 13 yards out, equalizing the score at 10-10.
Arizona then embarked on a methodical drive down the field, featuring numerous carries by running back Kiner and critical completions to tight end Trey McBride. Despite their efforts, they had to settle for another field goal, reclaiming a 13-10 lead. The Falcons responded emphatically as Cousins connected with Kyle Pitts for a 5-yard touchdown pass just before halftime. Even though the extra point was blocked, Atlanta held a 16-13 lead at the intermission.
Third Quarter: Field Goal Battle
The third quarter primarily belonged to the kickers, with both squads struggling to penetrate the end zone. Atlanta added a 40-yard field goal, widening their lead to 19-13. Arizona seized a prime opportunity to equalize the game; however, their 44-yard field goal attempt veered wide right, allowing the Falcons to maintain their advantage as they entered the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter: Falcons Pull Away
Early in the fourth quarter, Atlanta solidified their victory when Cousins executed a 1-yard rushing touchdown, capping a strategic drive. The seasoned quarterback demonstrated remarkable determination, diving into the end zone to extend the Falcons' lead to 26-13.
Arizona endeavored to initiate a comeback; however, their efforts were thwarted by a critical fumble recovery by the Falcons' defense and several missed opportunities. The Cardinals did manage to convert one more field goal to narrow the score to 26-16, yet it proved insufficient. A late interception by Henderson ultimately secured the victory for Atlanta.
Star Performances
Bijan Robinson continued to exhibit his prowess with another remarkable performance, rushing for 76 yards and contributing 92 receiving yards along with a touchdown. His combined 168 total yards from scrimmage reaffirmed his status as one of the NFL's most exciting young talents.
Kyle Pitts added significant value with 57 receiving yards and a touchdown on seven receptions, further enhancing his recent streak of strong performances. For Arizona, Michael Wilson emerged as a bright spot, accumulating 52 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Elijah Higgins led the team with 91 receiving yards on seven receptions.
Looking Ahead
This victory grants Atlanta (6-9) their second consecutive win, generating positive momentum as they approach the season's final week. Although their playoff aspirations have been mathematically extinguished, the Falcons are demonstrating the type of execution that might translate well into the next year.
On the other hand, Arizona (3-12) continues to face challenges, now on a seven-game losing streak. Nevertheless, young players such as Marvin Harrison Jr. and Michael Wilson are gaining invaluable experience for future seasons.
Both teams will conclude their 2025 campaigns in Week 17 as they prepare for the upcoming offseason.
