Four Homer Hero: Suárez Shines, But Braves Steal the Victory
Eugenio Suárez made baseball history with an amazing performance, but his team still came up short. The 33-year-old Arizona Diamondbacks player hit four home runs in a single game. Suárez’s big night helped the Diamondbacks keep it close, but the Atlanta Braves pulled out an 8-7 win in 10 innings.
Suárez became just the 19th player in Major League Baseball history to hit four homers in one game. Even more rare, he's only the second player ever to hit four home runs and still end up on the losing team.
"What can I say? Obviously, it's awesome," Suárez said after the game. "I never thought in my life that I would be able to hit four homers in a game." - MLB.com
How it Happened
His power show started in the second inning with a solo home run. In the fourth inning, he smashed a two-run homer, giving his team an early lead. Suárez wasn't done yet, he added another solo homer in the sixth inning that traveled an incredible 443 feet, the longest of his four blasts. His fourth and final home run came in the ninth inning, another solo shot that helped his team tie the game and send it to extra innings.
The first three home runs all came against Braves starting pitcher Grant Holmes. In total, Suárez's four home runs traveled a combined 1,655 feet - more than a quarter mile of home run distance.
Despite his personal success, Suárez felt conflicted about the outcome.
"Mixed feelings right now because we didn't win the game," Suárez explained. "But this is baseball; that's why this game is so special." - MLB.com
A Historic Achievement
The last player to accomplish the rare four-homer feat was also a Diamondbacks player, J.D. Martinez back in 2017.
What makes Suárez's achievement even more impressive is that he has struggled at the plate this season. Before this breakout game, he was batting just .167 with 6 home runs and 15 runs batted in.
This incredible performance might be just what he needs to turn his season around. While the Diamondbacks hope this performance helps Suárez find his groove for the rest of the season, baseball fans everywhere can appreciate witnessing one of the rarest feats in America's pastime. Four home runs in one game is something most players only dream about, Suárez lived it.
