2025 LitZone MLB Power Rankings: #5 - #1
Finally, we’ve reached the true contenders for the World Series. While the other teams certainly have a chance to join the fray, this group of teams is certainly the cream of the crop.
5. San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants land at #3 in our rankings, led by Mr. Consistent, Logan Webb. You could set your watch to Webb's performances – he's produced nearly identical great numbers three years in a row. The Giants can count on him for 200 innings and quality starts all season long.
Willy Adames was San Francisco's big offseason addition at shortstop. Now they need him to live up to his big contract by bringing his excellent defense and powerful bat to the team. Giants fans are excited to see what he can do in their ballpark.
Matt Chapman continues to provide leadership and a steady presence. His glove at third base is still amazing, and his bat provides pop in the lineup. The question is whether he can maintain his production as he gets older.
But the Giants early season success is largely thanks to an early 7 game win streak. Let’s see if they can keep it up.
4. New York Mets
The Mets secured the fourth spot in our rankings after making the biggest splash in baseball history.
Juan Soto arrives in New York after signing a record-shattering $765 million contract. The pressure on his shoulders is enormous, no player has ever carried such a massive price tag. Soto's incredible eye at the plate and smooth swing make him special, but fans will expect nothing short of greatness to justify that contract. Can he handle the New York spotlight?
Pete Alonso, known as the "Polar Bear," continues his quest to be baseball's premier power hitter. After showing some concerning signs of decline, questions swirl about whether he can still reach the 30+ home run mark that made him famous. The big first baseman needs to prove his best days aren't behind him.
Francisco Lindor brings his flashy style and all-around excellence to shortstop. His rare ability to hit for power (30 home runs) while stealing bases (30 steals) makes him one of baseball's most complete players.
The Mets need him to be both their emotional leader in the clubhouse. If these three stars can mesh together and perform at their highest levels, the Mets could compete for the World Series. However, with large contracts come large expectations, and the pressure in New York is always intense.
3. Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies stand at number 3 in our power rankings as they try to knock the California teams off the top spots.
Bryce Harper, at 32 years old, is chasing his third MVP award. With his powerful swing and fierce competitive spirit, he remains the Phillies' biggest star. Can he continue to dominate despite being older than many of his competitors?
Trea Turner is known for being one of the fastest players in baseball. Now at 31, people are watching to see if he'll slow down or continue blazing around the bases. When Turner gets on first base, everyone in the stadium knows a stolen base attempt might be coming.
Zack Wheeler has been one of the best pitchers in baseball for years but hasn't won a Cy Young Award yet. His fastball and breaking pitches make batters look foolish, and this could finally be the year he wins pitching's biggest prize.
The Phillies face a tough challenge - their star players are getting older, and their window to win a championship might be closing. Is this the year they can put everything together and finally overcome the Dodgers?
2. San Diego Padres
The Padres claim the second spot in our rankings as they continue a scorching hot start to the season.
Fernando Tatis Jr. remains one of baseball's most electrifying talents, but injuries have kept him from reaching his full potential. With his rare combination of power, speed, and defensive flair, a healthy Tatis could quickly rise to become the game's best all-around player. The big question is whether he can finally stay on the field for a full season.
Jackson Merrill looks to build on his impressive rookie campaign where he finished as the Rookie of the Year runner-up. The young outfielder showed poise beyond his years, but now faces the challenge of adjusting as opposing teams develop more detailed scouting reports on him.
Manny Machado continues to be the steady veteran presence in San Diego's lineup. As he enters the later stages of his career, can he continue shouldering the leadership responsibilities while maintaining his production at the plate and at third base?
After several seasons of high expectations followed by disappointment, the Padres hope this mix of established stars and emerging talent can finally deliver consistent results and a deep playoff run.
1. Los Angeles Dodgers
The Dodgers sit atop our power rankings after winning the World Series last season and starting this season strong. But they face the difficult challenge of trying to win back-to-back championships.
Shohei Ohtani continues his incredible journey as baseball's most unique player. After winning MVP with his bat last season, he's now attempting to return to pitching following Tommy John Surgery. If he succeeds at being both an elite hitter and pitcher again, we might be watching the most remarkable player in baseball history.
Mookie Betts brings his all-around excellence to the field every day. His combination of power hitting, base running, and defense makes him one of the most complete players in the game.
Freddie Freeman remains one of baseball's most consistent hitters. His ability to hit for both average and power makes the Dodgers lineup especially dangerous.
The question hanging over the Dodgers is whether they can maintain their championship level. Repeating as World Series champions is one of the hardest feats in sports, but with their trio of superstars, they have the talent to make history again.
