Padres Crush Rockies 21-0 in Historic Blowout at Coors Field
The San Diego Padres made baseball history on Saturday with a jaw-dropping 21-0 win over the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field. It was the largest margin of victory in Padres history and one of the biggest shutout wins ever in Major League Baseball.
When you hear a score like 21-0, your first thought is offense, and the Padres delivered plenty of that. They scored five runs in the first inning and exploded for eight more in the fourth. By the sixth inning, they were already up 20-0. The Padres scored at least one run in six straight innings and finished with 24 hits, tying a team record set in 2003. Eight different players had multiple hits, something the franchise had never done before in a game.
Superstar Fernando Tatis Jr. added to the show, going 2-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored, and three RBIs (runs batted in). Young outfielder Jackson Merrill also shined, getting four hits in six at-bats with two runs and two RBIs.
Rookie Kolek Makes History on the Mound
As incredible as the offense was, the real story might be rookie pitcher Stephen Kolek. In just his second career start, Kolek was outstanding. He threw a complete game shutout, which means he pitched all nine innings without allowing a single run. He gave up only five hits and struck out seven batters. This performance made Kolek the first Padres pitcher to ever throw a shutout at Coors Field, a ballpark known for being very hitter-friendly. He’s also the first visiting pitcher to do it since future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw in 2013.
Things got so out of hand that the Rockies turned to their catcher, Jacob Stallings, to pitch the last two innings. This sometimes happens in blowout games to save the regular pitchers’ arms for future games. Surprisingly, Stallings only gave up one run in those two innings.
Two Teams, Two Directions
This game shows two teams heading in very different directions. The Rockies, now with a league-worst record of 6-33, are facing a tough season and could be looking at big changes soon. The Padres, on the other hand, are tied for first place in the NL West with the Dodgers. With a powerful offense and young talent like Kolek stepping up, the Padres look ready to make a serious push to be one of the top teams in baseball.
