Red Sox Lose Star Third Baseman Alex Bregman to Injury
Alex Bregman, the Boston Red Sox’s powerful third baseman, is heading to the injured list. The reason? He hurt his quadriceps muscle, which is the big muscle in the front of your thigh. The team said he has a "strained quad," which means that muscle got stretched or even slightly torn. This kind of injury can be painful and usually takes a long time to heal. Running, jumping, and even walking fast can make it worse if you don’t give it time to recover. That’s why Bregman will be out for a while.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora called it a “significant injury.” That means it’s not something small that will heal quickly. “He’s going to be out for a while,” Cora said. “Very similar to ’21.” Back in 2021, Bregman had the same type of injury when he was with the Houston Astros, and he missed about two and a half months. Cora didn’t give an exact timeline this time, but he hopes Bregman will return as soon as he’s healthy. Before the injury, Bregman was having a great season. He was batting .299, with 11 home runs and 35 RBIs (runs batted in). That made him one of the Red Sox’s most important hitters and a big part of their success so far this year. Losing him is definitely a challenge for the team.
What is the Quadriceps Muscle?
The quadriceps, or “quads,” are a group of four muscles on the front of your thigh. They start near your hip and run down to your knee. Their main job is to straighten your leg and help you stand, walk, run, and jump. When you kick a ball or get up from a chair, your quads do most of the work. Strong quads keep your knees stable and make everyday movements easier.
Top Prospect Marcelo Mayer Called Up
To fill Bregman’s spot, the Red Sox called up one of their top prospects, Marcelo Mayer. The 22-year-old has been playing well in the minor leagues and is ranked the No. 6 prospect in all of baseball. The Red Sox chose him with the 4th overall pick in the 2021 draft, and he’s been working his way up ever since.
The Red Sox are pushing to make the playoffs this year, and losing Bregman makes that goal much harder. He's been one of their best hitters, and quad injuries can be tricky because they often take longer to heal than expected.
However, getting Mayer on the team gives fans something to be excited about. He's part of the Red Sox's future plans, and this injury might give him a chance to show what he can do in the major leagues earlier than expected.
