Shocking Trade: Red Sox Send Rafael Devers to the Giants
In a stunning move that has shocked fans across baseball, the Boston Red Sox have traded star slugger Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. The deal was officially announced on Sunday and could end up being the biggest blockbuster of this year’s trade deadline, even with more than a month still to go.
A Blockbuster Deal
The Red Sox are receiving four players in return: pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison, along with prospects James Tibbs and Jose Bello. Hicks is a hard-throwing right-hander with experience late in games, while Harrison is a 22-year-old left-handed starter with big upside and is considered the prize of the deal. Tibbs is ranked as the Giants’ No. 4 prospect, according to MLB.com. Bello is an unranked minor leaguer.
Devers, 28, had been considered the face of the franchise after signing a 10-year, $313.5 million contract that began in 2024. After the Red Sox signed Alex Bregman this past offseason, Devers, who had been the team’s third baseman for nine seasons, was asked to shift to designated hitter. He was not happy with the move and initially refused, though he eventually agreed. Then in early May, after first baseman Triston Casas suffered a season-ending injury, the team asked Devers to take ground balls at first base. That request led to further frustration and a tense exchange with team officials, including chief baseball officer Craig Breslow. Team owner John Henry even flew to Kansas City to meet with Devers face-to-face
According to Boston Globe reporter Pete Abraham: “Per Red Sox sources: the team's feeling was that a $313.5M contract comes with responsibilities to do what is right for the team and that Devers did not live up to those responsibilities.”
The Red Sox had seen enough. And they traded him.
Giants Finally Land Their Star
The Giants have been chasing a superstar for years. They went after Aaron Judge. They went after Shohei Ohtani. They even agreed to a deal with Carlos Correa before it collapsed due to medical concerns. Each time, they came up empty.
Now they’ve finally landed one. And not just any star.
Devers is one of the best left-handed hitters in the game and has been scorching hot at the plate. He’s still just 28 years old and already has a long-term deal in place, giving the Giants a true franchise player to build around for years to come.
San Francisco has lacked star power and consistent home run threats in recent seasons. They haven’t had a 30-home run hitter since Barry Bonds in 2004. That could change very soon.
The Giants are making their push now.
What’s Next?
The Red Sox are still in the playoff hunt with a 37-36 record, sitting just half a game out of a Wild Card spot. But trading away Devers raises big questions about what direction they will take.
It will be interesting to see if the Red Sox decide to be sellers at the deadline or make an attempt to replace some of Devers' production and make a run to the playoffs.
As for the Giants, this is the type of move that signals belief in their roster and a win-now mentality. Devers gives them a dangerous middle-of-the-order bat and the kind of star presence they’ve been chasing for years.
This is a trade that could reshape the season and both franchises for years to come.
