Star Power on Display as Yankees and Dodgers Clash in LA
The calendar says May, but the energy at Dodger Stadium on Friday night felt like the postseason as the Yankees and Dodgers faced off once again. Just seven months after battling for the championship, these two powerhouse teams met again at Dodger Stadium, bringing the same intensity, even with less on the line.
The crowd barely had time to settle in before the action began. In the top of the first, Aaron Judge launched a homer for the Yankees. Moments later, Shohei Ohtani answered with one of his own for the Dodgers. It was the first time in MLB history that both reigning MVPs homered in the same inning. It was a thrilling way to kick off the weekend series.
The Dodgers Storm Back
By the third inning, the Yankees had taken a 5-2 lead thanks to three more home runs off Dodgers pitcher Tony Gonsolin. Yankees catcher Austin Wells hit his 9th homer of the year, outfielder Trent Grisham added his 13th, and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt launched his 6th. But from that point on, the Dodgers took control of the game.
Ohtani added another blast in the sixth off Yankees ace Max Fried, giving him 22 home runs this season, the most in Major League Baseball. That started a rally that saw five straight Dodgers get hits. Andy Pages tied the game with an RBI single, and Michael Conforto drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in the go-ahead run. All four runs in the inning were charged to Fried, and the Dodgers never looked back, finishing with an 8-5 victory.
A Clash of Titans
“We love superstars and to start the game off with Judge hitting a homer and Shohei answering in the bottom half was pretty exciting for everyone,” said Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. “But huge game for us to win.” (The Athletic)
Judge also spoke about the moment. “I like playing against the best,” he said. “You want to play against the best teams, the best players. Ohtani is definitely one of the best players in the game, and he has been for a long time. He’s off to another fantastic start this season.” (MLB.com)
Friday night’s game was the perfect opening act to what promises to be an action-packed weekend showdown between two of baseball’s biggest teams. With stars like Judge and Ohtani putting on a show, fans can expect more fireworks as the series continues.
