Teams 15β12: Sixers, Heat, Magic, and Raptors
Week 21 of the 2025-26 NBA season is winding down, and the race for playoff position is heating up across both conferences. From teams fighting just to stay in the play-in mix to squads locked in as legitimate title threats, every game matters right now. Let's count down this week's power rankings, starting with numbers 15 through 12.
15. Philadelphia 76ers (37-31) β The Sixers are sitting at No. 8 in the East, and their playoff spot is not guaranteed yet. Tyrese Maxey is playing like a superstar, averaging more than 29 points per game and carrying this offense almost by himself. Rookie V.J. Edgecombe has been a bright spot too, averaging about 15 points and 1.5 steals per game. Philadelphia won two games this week against Portland and Brooklyn, bouncing back after a tough loss to Detroit.
14. Miami Heat (38-30) β Miami sits at No. 7 in the East and is good enough to make the playoffs, but not quite good enough to make noise once they get there. Norman Powell has been a revelation, averaging nearly 23 points per game as the team's leading scorer. Bam Adebayo anchors the defense with about a steal and a block every night. The Heat beat Milwaukee this week but dropped a game to Orlando.
13. Orlando Magic (38-28) β The Magic are No. 5 in the East and playing with real confidence. Without Franz Wagner for most of the season due to injury, Orlando has leaned on Desmond Bane, Paolo Banchero, and the emerging Anthony Black. This week, they beat Miami and survived a wild overtime thriller against Washington. Orlando's defense remains one of the best in the conference, and the Magic are clearly more than a one-season wonder.
12. Toronto Raptors (38-29) β The Raptors are one of the Eastern Conference's biggest surprises, sitting at No. 6. Scottie Barnes averages nearly 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists while also defending multiple positions. Brandon Ingram leads the team in scoring at nearly 22 points per game. Toronto went 2-1 this week, beating Detroit and Phoenix while losing to New Orleans. Their length and versatility make them a nightmare matchup for any opponent.
Teams 11β9: Suns, Cavaliers, and Nuggets
11. Phoenix Suns (39-28) β Few people expected the Suns to be in the playoff picture this season. After trading Kevin Durant to Houston, many thought Phoenix was heading into a full rebuild. Instead, Devin Booker has stepped up as the team's engine, averaging about 25 points and 6 assists per game. The biggest surprise has been Dillon Brooks, averaging nearly 21 points per game on top of his usual tough defense. Booker erupted for 43 points against Indiana this week in a 123-108 win, though Phoenix lost to Toronto the next day.
10. Cleveland Cavaliers (41-27) β The Cavs are No. 4 in the East, and the midseason addition of James Harden has completely changed their identity. Harden's elite playmaking has made life easier for Donovan Mitchell and unlocked Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen with a steady diet of lobs and easy finishes. Cleveland had a wild week, blowing out Dallas by 33 points on Friday before losing a rematch to the Mavericks on Sunday. They remain a dangerous team when everything is clicking.
9. Denver Nuggets (41-27) β Denver is No. 5 in the West, and even with Nikola Jokic battling a knee injury at points this season, the Nuggets have stayed in contention. Jokic is leading the team with nearly 29 points per game while averaging a triple-double in rebounds and assists. Jamal Murray exploded for 39 points Thursday as Denver erased a big deficit to beat San Antonio. However, the Nuggets dropped a heartbreaker to the Lakers on Saturday, losing 127-125 in overtime. If Jokic stays healthy in the playoffs, Denver is a real threat.
Teams 8β5: Wolves, Lakers, Rockets, and Knicks
8. Minnesota Timberwolves (41-27) β Anthony Edwards has fully arrived as a superstar, averaging nearly 30 points per game and playing with the kind of confidence that only elite players carry. This week, Edwards dropped 42 points at Golden State to lead Minnesota to a 127-117 win. However, the Timberwolves lost to Oklahoma City on Sunday, 116-103, a reminder that they still have work to do. Their defense, led by Rudy Gobert's rim protection and Jaden McDaniels' perimeter lockdown, is among the league's best.
7. Los Angeles Lakers (42-25) β Luka Doncic is doing something special in Los Angeles. Averaging 33 points, more than 8 assists, and almost 2 steals per game, he has made the Lakers one of the West's most dangerous teams. Austin Reaves has grown into a true co-star, averaging a career-high 25 points per game. The Lakers beat Denver in overtime on Saturday, 127-125, in one of the week's best games. Earlier in the week, Doncic dropped 51 points against Chicago in a 142-130 win, with Reaves adding 30 of his own.
6. Houston Rockets (41-25) β Houston is No. 4 in the West and a legitimate playoff team, but questions remain about whether they can beat the league's best. Kevin Durant leads the team at 26 points per game, and Alperen ΕengΓΌn runs the offense beautifully from the post. The Rockets squeaked out a 107-105 win over New Orleans on Friday. Their biggest weakness is inconsistency in the backcourt without Fred VanVleet. Reed Sheppard has not yet become the star Houston hoped he would be.
5. New York Knicks (44-25) β The Knicks are No. 3 in the East and playing their best basketball of the season. Jalen Brunson is the engine of this team, controlling games with his scoring and decision-making. New York won both of its games this week, beating Indiana 101-92 and edging Golden State 110-107. Josh Hart continues to bring relentless energy off every possession. The defensive wing duo of OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges makes the Knicks a tough out, but Karl-Anthony Towns' defensive limitations could become an issue in a deep playoff run.
Top 4: Celtics, Pistons, Spurs, Thunder
4. Boston Celtics (44-23) β Boston was supposed to struggle after Jayson Tatum's Achilles injury, but the Celtics are thriving. Jaylen Brown has stepped up in a major way, averaging nearly 30 points per game and proving that Boston can compete without its other superstar. Derrick White has been remarkable, leading the team in blocks despite being a guard, while also racking up assists and steals. This week, Boston beat Washington 111-100 but fell to Oklahoma City 104-102 in a close fight. With Tatum now returning from injury, this team could become a true championship contender.
3. Detroit Pistons (48-19) β The Pistons own the best record in the Eastern Conference and are No. 1 in the East. Cade Cunningham has pushed himself into the MVP conversation with his ability to create shots, distribute the ball, and take over games. Detroit's defense is relentless, with Ausar Thompson suffocating wings, Jalen Duren controlling the paint, and Isaiah Stewart providing toughness everywhere. The Pistons beat Memphis 126-110 this week, though they dropped a Sunday game to Toronto 119-108. Detroit is the team to beat in the East.
2. San Antonio Spurs (49-18) β Victor Wembanyama is playing like one of the best players on the planet. The 7-foot-4 superstar anchors both ends of the floor, stretches defenses with his three-point shooting, and leads the league in blocked shots. Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle give San Antonio two more dynamic scorers, while De'Aaron Fox provides speed and veteran leadership at point guard. The Spurs beat Charlotte this week but fell to Denver 136-131 in a back-and-forth battle. San Antonio is the only team that has consistently challenged the Thunder this season.
1. Oklahoma City Thunder (53-15) β The defending champions sit atop the Western Conference and show no signs of slowing down. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is once again in the MVP conversation, staying calm and efficient every single night. Chet Holmgren protects the rim while also knocking down threes, giving OKC a weapon no team can truly replicate. The Thunder beat Boston 104-102 in a tight midweek battle and then handled Minnesota 116-103 on Sunday. Their depth is extraordinary, and until someone knocks them off, Oklahoma City remains the standard for every team in the NBA.
