Week 21 Rookies Making Noise Across the NBA
Week 21 of the 2025-26 NBA season gave rookie fans plenty to cheer about. From Dallas to Philadelphia to Charlotte and Brooklyn, first-year players are stepping up and making their mark. Some had big scoring nights, while others showed off their playmaking skills. A few even helped their teams pull off surprise victories.
This rookie class is already proving it belongs in the NBA. The top picks are averaging impressive numbers, and several are carrying heavy loads for their teams. Whether their squads are contenders or rebuilding, these rookies are giving fans real reasons to pay attention. Let's take a closer look at who shined brightest during Week 21.
Cooper Flagg Stuns Cleveland, VJ Edgecombe Steps Up
Cooper Flagg had one of his best games of the season in Dallas's road win over Cleveland. The 6-foot-9 rookie finished with 27 points, 10 assists, and 6 rebounds while shooting nearly 59 percent from the field. That kind of performance from a teenager in a tough road environment is rare and shows just how talented Flagg really is.
The Mavericks pulled off a 130-120 upset over the Cavaliers, who were sitting fourth in the Eastern Conference at 41-27. Dallas trailed Cleveland at halftime but exploded in the third quarter, outscoring the Cavs by 14 points. Flagg controlled the game during those key moments, showing poise that most rookies don't have. With a season average of about 20 points per game, Flagg is already looking like a future franchise player for Dallas.
VJ Edgecombe stepped into a much bigger role for the Philadelphia 76ers when stars like Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid were all sidelined with injuries. Against Brooklyn, he finished with 16 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 block in 35 minutes. Those 7 assists showed off a playmaking ability that goes well beyond what most rookies can offer. Philadelphia won 104-97, and Edgecombe's steady performance was a big reason why.
Kon Knueppel Shoots Lights Out, Ben Saraf Grows Up Fast
Kon Knueppel is quickly becoming one of the most exciting scorers in the entire rookie class. The fourth overall pick out of Duke has a shooter's instinct and a high basketball IQ that makes him incredibly hard to guard. In Charlotte's win over Miami, he put up 22 points on 57 percent shooting, adding 2 steals and a block. Against San Antonio the game before, he still scored 20 points even in a loss.
Knueppel is shooting an outstanding 44 percent from three-point range this season, which is elite even by veteran standards. His season average of about 19 points per game puts him right in the conversation for Rookie of the Year. Although he may not be the most athletic defender, his offensive instincts and smart movement off the ball make him a constant threat. Charlotte is 35-34 and sitting right on the playoff bubble, and Knueppel's scoring gives the Hornets a real weapon down the stretch.
Ben Saraf is a 6-foot-6 rookie point guard from Israel playing for the Brooklyn Nets, one of the league's youngest teams. While Brooklyn is 17-51 and deep into a rebuild, Saraf is using every game as a learning experience. Against Philadelphia, he scored 12 points with 5 assists and shot 46 percent from the field. Against Portland, he bounced back with 15 points and 4 steals. His consistency is improving, and that is exactly what Brooklyn needs to see from their young core.
Carter Bryant Contributes as Spurs Roll Toward Title Talk
Carter Bryant may not have the biggest stat lines, but he is doing exactly what the San Antonio Spurs need from their rookie 3-and-D wing. In San Antonio's 119-115 road win over the Los Angeles Clippers, Bryant came off the bench and scored 10 points in 21 minutes while grabbing 5 rebounds. He took advantage of the extra playing time that came with Dylan Harper sitting out due to injury. His energy and versatility on both ends helped San Antonio hold off a tough Clippers team.
The Spurs are now an impressive 51-18, which puts them second in the entire conference. Victor Wembanyama and Stephon Castle are leading the way, but role players like Bryant are an important part of the formula. Against Sacramento the following night, Bryant added 7 points, 3 rebounds, a steal, and a block, helping San Antonio earn another win. While his season averages are modest at about 4 points per game, Bryant is learning from some of the best players in the league every single day.
All five of these rookies are finding their footing in very different situations. Flagg is carrying a rebuilding Dallas team on his back, while Bryant is learning alongside a championship-caliber roster. Whether their teams are winning or losing, each of these young players is growing fast. If Week 21 is any sign of what's to come, this rookie class is going to be very fun to watch for years ahead.
